Resources on Water Sustainability in Charleston

Resources on Sustainability, Water Conservation, and CofC's Efforts.

The connections between race, activism, and sustainability are undeniable. Racial inequities mean that communities of color are disproportionately negatively affected by environmental agendas. Those same inequities have made environmental activism more difficult and more dangerous for people of color. For a good history of how this imbalance developed in the United States, see Dorceta E. Taylor's Race, Class, Gender, and American Environmentalism.

In the Charleston area, there are several organizations working on issues of water protection:

The Gullah-Geechee Sustainability Think Tank at the Gullah-Geechee nation website.

The Coastal Conservation League includes clean water as one of their most important areas of activism.

Charleston Waterkeeper works to "identify and address the issues impacting our right to swimmable, drinkable, fishable water" in the Charleston area.

CofC's Sustainability Literacy Institute is hosting a number of speakers and events that directly relate to the issue of water pollution.
